Fall 2008 Essentials

This fall we’re bringing back the classic MAN.

Trends come and go, but classic menswear is eternal.

Looking towards the runway can give us inspiration, but how do we actually bring some of these looks into our outfits?

In this article, I’m going to give you a quick list of some of this fall’s most practical and ready-to-wear fashion trends. It doesn’t matter what your personal style is, if you’re lost as what to buy this fall, make sure to pick up some of these basics to keep your image fly.

Here are just six things you can go out and get today to kick off your fall wardrobe:

Trench Coat

Every man should own a trench coat, so this fall look for a trench coat that meets your style. If you’re a working professional, you should absolutely own a trench coat as much as you should own a suit. If you’re still a student, wearing a trench coat will definitely set you apart as one of the most stylish guy on campus.

Wear a Tie Outside of Work

Most guys are afraid to wear ties when they go out because they think ties are just for work, but ties can be stylish for any time of the day or occasion. Ties are also the quintessential mark of a man and will take any outfit up the stylish notch. Just make sure that if you’re going to wear a tie outside of the office, they’re the right kind (i.e., skinnier tie).

Tough Leather for a Tough Guy

If you don’t own a leather jacket, consider finding one in your style this fall if you’re looking to display more of your wild side. They have biker-style jackets, to even cooler styles like the military-inspired leather jacket above.

The Rakish Scarf

A scarf is a great accessory you can bring into your look this fall. It’s also a great way to be bold and do some “peacocking” the stylish way with some color. This fall, show off your confidence with a wool scarf in something brighter than the basic black or grays that are so tempting to fall back on.

Keep Your Neck Toasty

A turtleneck can be worn under any style jacket. This season, you can even try pairing it with a blazer for an extra refined look. Then add your own style with your favorite pair of shoes that show off your unique personality.

Cardigan

Not a lot of guys feel right in a cardigan, but most of the time it’s because they feel too dressed up in one. If you’re one of these guys, here’s how to dress down the cardigan: Wear the cardigan with a crew-neck shirt underneath instead of a collared one, and pair it with your favorite pair of jeans and accessories that create a balance that takes away from that “dressy” look. Of course when you do want to dress one up, add dress pants, a collared shirt, and even a tie if the occasion calls for it.

Puffy Fashion

Personally I always loved down vests because they keep you warm in the fall without hiding what you’re wearing underneath like a jacket does. Perfect for chilly, but not cold, weather. They were popular many years ago and now they’re back. For all you skinny guys out there, it’ll give you some extra mass without looking like you’re drowning in your clothes.

Conclusion

Well there you have it. If your closet feels empty or lackluster, then hit your nearest shopping area with this list in mind. It’ll cut down the confusion about what you should pick up to upgrade your wardrobe this fall.

I’m super busy with all the 1-on-1 consultations lately so I had to keep this week’s article short, but I hope you enjoyed it! It’s going to get even busier during the fall/winter seasons when people need to do the most shopping for clothes, so if you’re looking for a personal shopper or someone to help build your style to pimp status, reserve your spot today.

Stay sharp,

Jae

If you could let me know where THAT specific leather jacket is from, it would be appreciated…

That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for, but can’t find even close to….

I’m not so sure about the cardigan, but I like the trenchcoat. Does that also follow the skin tone matching rules?

  3. 3 Chino

great article ~ I really like that last look

i’m definitely trying some of these looks. the turtleneck under the jacket is something i’ve done before. the boots look awesome with that outfit. definitely requires balls to pull off though.

This is a good lineup. Scarves are great accessories and down vest is classic. The tie outside of work is going to be something I will work on but that will require me to go out and get some ties…

    …excellent.

How can I purchase that military leather jacket?? what website has it available?

Tried on my first cardigan ever today.

    Yuck.

    I felt like my Grandma.

But I’ll definately find something like the one shown here, and overcome the yuckyness.

    Hey PartyInMyShower,

I felt the same way when I tried on a cardigan in a shop for the first time and thought yuck. But then I warmed to it, and tried on one which was a bit stylish. Now I love them. I’m skinny and I realise it looks better on me layered with a good collared shirt. I’m starting to integrate it into my style, but believe me, is very stylish piece of attire if you can get it right for yourself ;)

    Hi guys,

I’ve just read this article and although I’m not interested in that military leather jacket, so many of you want one I see, so I thought I would look for it, and there I found it:

Quick question regarding the cardigan… I’m about 6′5”, pretty skinny, and I have a very long neck. I’ve heard it’s poor fashion for someone like me to wear tops with low collars necks because it elongates my neck. Think a cardigan would be a fashion mistake, or would a collared shirt underneath take care of the problem?

Jon, a collared shirt underneath would take care of the problem easily. If you wear a t-shirt underneath, you can wear a jacket with a high collar like this:

    or

    To visually shorten your neck.

    Forgot the peacoat.

BTW - where is the puffy jacket from?
