The start of a new year is always a great time to stop and reflect how much we’ve learned and accomplished in the past year - and set some new goals.

Do you have any major goals this year?

Try this:

Imagine that at the end of this year, you meet some friends you haven’t seen in a very long time. Imagine that the look on their faces is that of total shock. Imagine their jaws hitting the floor, and not being able to continuously voice how much you’ve transformed. You already knew this would happen, because you planned it. You love this moment - it’s nothing but glorious. It’s one of the greatest signs to yourself that you’ve grown tremendously.

So what changes did you see in yourself when you imagined that?

For me, it is transforming my body. Having a body good enough to grace the cover of  Men’s Health magazine was something that I always wanted. I look back and see that I didn’t want it bad enough - I wasn’t willing to do everything it took to actually get a body like that.

I’ve been going to the gym for many years, so I’m pretty muscular. But I want to take my body to a new personal best. My biggest problem was that I wasn’t eating effectively (I wasn’t consistently getting enough quality calories and protein). I started planning all my nutrition to a science and saw that my previous habits of eating were detrimental to my body building goals. I was reminded that nutrition is 80% of body building, and that muscle is built outside of the gym, not at the gym.

My goal this year is to gain 20lbs of more muscle mass, while keeping my body fat under 10%.

So this year, what is that one major change you want to make?

Maybe you want to transform your body. Maybe it’s getting your style of clothing to a new level. Maybe it’s dramatically improving your social skills.

But we all know that it’s easy to set ambitious goals, the problem is sticking through and making that lasting change.

So 2008 is coming to an end, and 2009 is right around the corner. Wow, what a year! In 2008, we were blessed with the tremendous growth in our blog readership, and with it,  the awesome privilege of working directly with hundreds of men from all around the world in improving their style.

What do you think about when you hear someone use the word “style”?

Whenever the term “style” is used, it most commonly refers to one’s fashion or outer appearance. But I want to remind you that style is much more than your shoulder length haircut, fashionable coat, or your Ferragamo shoes.

Style = Expression

It’s the total combination of the way you dress, talk, move your body, or do anything for that matter. Simply put, it’s how we express our inner being outwardly. This includes all of our thoughts, emotions, interests, and values. Everything on the outside is merely a reflection of what’s on the inside.

A lot of the people think that what I do is just help people transform their outer appearance. This is what they think of when they hear “style coach” or “image consultant,” and will come to me for a personal shopping session - wanting mainly to focus on fashion.

Although, I like to think of myself as a “self-expression coach,” because I firmly believe that fashion is just one part of your style.

Many years ago, the following was my closet situation:

I would wake up to find Friday night’s blazer and jeans tossed over my chair, or worse, sprawled out in a rebellious fashion on the floor. In disgust, I would make my way to my closet to find a chaos of dress shirts, jeans, and sweaters, some of which were last worn a decade ago.

Stressed out by the mere sight of it, I would abandon any hope of a creative, high-caliber outfit, and go for the most familiar shirt, jeans, and jacket—one of my “favorite,” safe, and uninspiring looks of the month.

Fast forward to the present day:

I wake up to find the floor of my bedroom is immaculate, clear of any pieces of clothing. I open my closet to a collection of classic, robust, and daring pieces which are organized into professional and casual, type of clothing (pants, tops, etc.), and grouped by color.

Inspired by my perfectly ordered wardrobe, I easily pull out and put together each piece to create a bold outfit. It sets the tone of the day.

Here’s how I did it:

One of the greatest reasons why most men don’t know where they’re at with their style is because they don’t have a clear picture of their wardrobe. How can you fix something you’ve never diagnosed properly?

There is nothing that will make you look more stylish and give you a confidence boost like a nice pair of shoes.

Every man needs a few pairs of great dress shoes for the unavoidable occasions that will call for them. If you’re a man who knows how important quality dress shoes are, then you probably don’t need to read further. But for everyone else, this may be one of the most important fashion articles you read.

What you have on your feet can make or break any look. It doesn’t matter if you have the most amazing suit in the world, if you have bad shoes, you might as well roll around in a puddle of mud.

But no worries, in this month’s edition I’m going to give lots more details on how to put together some highly attractive outfits.

Modeling off Those Who Catch Our Attention 

I use pictures on this blog because style is such a visual thing. Even though many aspects of style are expressed through non-visual channels as well, the way you dress is the strongest and primary source of the impression you’ll make in any interaction.

I’m very analytical, and when I see a guy with a uniquely attractive fashion sense, I try to learn from him — by breaking his image down to the details. Often times, I get many new styling ideas I can pass on to my clients during a consultation.

Whenever you see a guy who makes a positive impression on you, make an effort to pinpoint what exactly causes this. Is it the way he dresses? If so, what about his outfit stands out to you? Certain pieces? How he put it together?

Modeling off other stylish people is something you should do constantly to get ideas for your own style. When you see something that works for someone else, try it yourself! Then make adjustments to your own liking.

Have you ever felt insecure about the way you look? Or wished a part of your face looked different? Whether you believe yourself to be ugly, average, or handsome we’ve all felt insecure about our looks at some point.

We live in a society that defines beauty to us through everything from advertisements to scientific studies about facial symmetry. Most of us grow up believing that how attractive we are as people has so much to do with our physical qualities.

As an image coach I see so many people out there who build their confidence solely on their outer appearance.

The perception we have of ourselves fuels our confidence, and those who build their worth on mostly physical appearance have their self-esteem set on a sandy foundation.

Lose the plain skullcap this season and go for something more stylish like this thick cable knit beanie that David Beckham is wearing. I love how it’s a bit oversized and balanced with his thick hoodie. It adds just the right amount of flair to his casual outfit.

Speaking of Beckham, he often likes to wear boots with his casual outfits.  These are the boots he wore when he signed his million dollar soccer deal. I checked them out and they’re by Frye - definitely a sweet pair of motorcycle style boots to get for this winter. [where to get them]

As I was looking for some Halloween costume ideas, I came across a picture of Ryan Reynolds who played Hannibal King in Blade:Trinity.  Rumor said he did not only gain 20 pounds of muscles, but also reduced his body fat percentage from 11% to 3%. If this doesn’t inspire you to work out then I don’t know what will. Having a great body makes everything fit so much better.
