Best Teeth Whitening Products

A girl once had me attracted through one quick flash of her smile.

Her teeth were so clean and beautiful that I felt like kissing her. It’s not even a weird fetish of mine, it was just a natural response to her healthy and gorgeous smile. I understand that part of it was a psychological response that we humans naturally have towards health indicators. We find a person more attractive when they show signs of good health, and become more unattracted when they show indicators of bad health or disease. For example, some attractive signs of health in women are a healthy smile, silky hair, and smooth clear skin. Unattractive signs would be all the opposites such as yellow teeth, frizzy hair, severe acne, dry wrinkly skin etc.

It’s pretty awesome that even attraction can be broken down to a science.

So this girl who attracted me reminded me how important it is to make sure our smiles are something we take care of. Within our everyday interactions and especially with the opposite sex, our smile is a key component of placing the other person at ease and filling them with good emotions.

All this article is meant to do is to remind you to check your teeth in the mirror and see if they need a little bit of touching up. No matter how genuine your smile is, nobody finds a row full of yellowish teeth attractive.

It gets pretty distracting when you’re talking to somebody and you feel like you’re talking to the Joker.

On a side note: Heath’s engrossing performance in The Dark Knight makes it one of the best movies I’ve seen in awhile. Go see it if you haven’t!

Check Out Your Smile

For starters, make sure that you’re brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing before you go to sleep. Most guys have their brushing down, but a lot of guys don’t floss. Don’t be one of them. If you don’t floss, food from yesterday or who knows how far back will stay in your teeth and eventually lead to plaque buildup. Not only will this discolor your teeth, but if not properly taken care of, will cause problems down the road for your gum and teeth.

Ask yourself, when is the last time you went to get a checkup with a dentist? If you haven’t been to one in the past six months, you should go. The best part is that they’ll clean everything up, so if you have any plaque, your dentist will remove it for you in all those hard to reach places.

For proper care at home, it’s recommended that you brush after every meal if you can. The food and drink that remains in between your teeth is what is staining them. If you’re not home and can’t brush your teeth, at least rinse your mouth out with water. Every time I go out to eat, I try to go to the bathroom before I leave the restaurant to rinse my mouth out of any food particles.

Besides solid food, the other major culprits of tooth discoloration are soft drinks, coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco.

For whiter teeth, try to cut down on these products or avoid them. If it has to do with genetics or age you can try to improve your smile with some whitening products, a whitening session at a dentist, or as a last resort, getting them cosmetically improved with veneers.

A Review of the Best Teeth Whitening Products

One of the best options is to get your teeth professionally whitened by a dentist, but it can cost you up to hundreds of dollars. It definitely gets you results, but I hear you’re told not to eat any kind of colored food for a couple of days, which should have just been the advice before the whitening process. It’s not permanent, but it’s faster and results are virtually guaranteed. But you can save a lot of money and still get good results with some great over the counter products out there.

There are so many teeth whitening products out there that you can use, but which one should you get?

Here is a quick overview of some of the top rated whitening products:

GoSMILE

Price: $99 (at Sephora)14 ampoules

Here’s what the creator, Jonathan B. Levine, DMD promises..

“GoSMILE ADVANCED formula B1 – Tooth Whitening On The Go is clinically proven to whiten your smile up to 10 shades in just 7 days. No fuss. No mess. No gel. No strips. No trays. No pain! The most potent form of tooth whitening outside the dentist’s office thanks to GoSMILE’s proprietary ampoule technology. 20 convenient, easy-to-use hygienic single dose ampoules . Use anywhere, twice a day, for 2 minutes. The soft brush tip lets you gently target specific teeth Won’t damage tooth enamel or cause sensitivity.”

Yes, it’s as cool as it sounds.

Great for people who love convenient, on-the-go access to results.

GoSMILE comes in these little vials you can take with you wherever you go. So if you’re meeting up with a girl and need a quick little touch up, you can whip it out and put it on.

Pros

-Super easy to use, had no taste and did see results.

Cons

-Not the best product out there, because it can easily get washed away by food and drink.

Crest White Strips

Price: ~$30 – $60

These bad boys are pretty popular with the many people who regularly whiten their teeth. From my own experience, I’ve seen the most consistent results with these. My theory is that it’s because unlike most of the other whitening gels that can become diluted or washed away by your saliva, the strips keeps continuous contact with the whitening gel and your teeth.

The instructions tell you that you can conveniently have them on while driving, working, or wherever you are, but this is not the case. Unless you’ve had good practice with putting these on, it’ll be more convenient to do them at home.

The bottom line is that they really do work, it is definitely one of the better teeth whiteners. If you keep up with it, and do it diligently, you’ll see an improvement.

There are different versions of this product. For example there is the classic, premium, and premium plus. The classic is the cheapest but takes two weeks. The premium takes seven days, and the premium plus is a stronger formula that takes ten days.

If you want some of the best results, and you’re willing to put in the time for it, Crest White Strips are a great choice.

Pros

-Great consistent results, guaranteed few shades whiter.
-Can do your work or whatever you have to do once you have them on
-Best results for your money

Cons

-Not so convenient as others
-Must get used to applying
-Can make teeth sensitive after use (goes away)

Listerine Whitening Quick Dissolving Strips

Price: $23.99 (56 count)

This is a fairly new product that has been getting very mixed reviews. I just got myself a box to test it out myself. I haven’t gone through the whole box yet but my teeth are getting whiter. The people who dislike the product complain that the packaging sucks and it’s hard to use. It is a bit annoying at first because the strips stick to your fingers and sometimes they are hard to get off the small paper backing. I found that it doesn’t totally dissolve in your mouth, unless you swallow some of the stuff (apparently it’s safe if you do). It tastes funny, but it’s not meant to taste gourmet so I can’t complain.

Pros

– Can wear them at work after a cup of coffee.
– No need (at least for me) to use the sink or brush afterward.
– Adheres firmly enough so that you can speak with them in your mouth.
– Some say they whiten your teeth about as well as the Crest strips, and that they’re more convenient without the extra work

Cons

– Sometimes it’s a bit difficult to take out of the package.
– Instructions a bit vague
– Don’t taste great…but not bad

Rembrandt 2 Hour White Kit

Price: $19.38 on Amazon

This product claims that you’ll have dramatically whiter teeth in just two hours. So if you have a big date and two hours to spare, this may be a great way to get a white smile before you go out.

Although, you might not want to end up looking like Ross from “Friends” when he whitened his teeth and his teeth were so white he blinded everybody.

I haven’t tried this product but reviews on amazon seem to be mixed. It’s probably not going to be a pleasant two hours but they may be worth it if you’re someone who just likes to get the process over and done with.

If you’re prone to sensitivity this product may really put your gums in pain for a few hours, but eventually will go away. It probably wouldn’t be the best idea to use before a date then.

Pros

-Done with whitening after just two hours

Cons

-Keeping a tray in your mouth for two hours
-May cause sensitive gums

One to avoid:

Celebrity Sexy Teeth

( Beware of SCAM on this product. )

With a lame name like this, somebody has to wonder, what they were thinking. I just wanted to put this up here in case somebody comes across this product. Apparently, one of my friends noticed that if you google “teeth whitening” they have a sales page that markets their product on

They make other products look like crap and basically list their as number one. Further research shows that these people are scam artists. Apparently nobody has anything good to say about this product and says they don’t have any contact information.

Beyond over-the-counter whitening products or dental whitening: Veneers

Another reason you could have white teeth is because of your age. Over time, the thin, hard white substance covering your teeth (enamel) may become worn, dulled, and discolored.

Dental veneers are custom-designed shells of tooth-like ceramic material that, when applied over the surface of a tooth, can cover worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing and chips or cracks.

Dental veneers fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry because they create a bright, white smile with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth. Even better, the translucent ceramic quality of modern veneers provides a more natural look than what’s been available in the past.

Typically these can cost you up to thousands of dollars depending on what you want done. This is an option for those who have teeth that have been damaged through a long period of wear and tear. Not only will you have a white smile, but perfectly aligned teeth. The change is more permanent that anything a whitening product can give you.

Final Thoughts

With whitening products, your results may vary from other people.

1. You have to get used to the process

The people who are veterans at teeth whitening seem to post up better reviews of the products since they know the process well and thus get consistent results.

2.  Have sensitive gums?

People who have sensitive gums may find that some products will be more harsh on their gums than others. Some people won’t have this problem at all. Others will feel like never bleaching their teeth again.

3. Try it yourself

I’ve tried to post only the products that bring results. There are so many products out there with mixed reviews, but if it has any positive reviews then it’s worth a try right? Everyone is different and you have to see which works best for you and your lifestyle. If you’re mostly working or a busy person, try the GoSMILE vials. If you have time to put on Crest White Strips while you’re watching TV or relaxing at home, it’s definitely worth a try.

  • David says:

I agree that it looks good with white teeth, but I don’t think it’s worth destroying your teeth for such a small change in your overall apperance

  • Jack White Strips says:

Based on this article, I bought Crest White Strips Premium and have been using them for 1 week now. They work. I literally saw a difference on the second day, and have had incremental improvement each day since. I also have found it to be no hassle to get two 30-minute treatments in per day. I can talk on the phone, shower, exercise, drink fluids, pretty much do anything except eat solid food while the strips are in. I usually forget about them soon after application.

@David: Before buying, I did some research on this and have not discovered any peer-reviewed studies demonstrating that peroxide tooth whiteners present any risk whatsoever to one’s teeth. Do you have a citation for this claim?

Most of the stains and problems in teeth may be caused by tobacco, coffee, tea or age. But sometimes such type of stains can be caused by some antibiotics as well such as tetracycline or too much fluoride.
